Pop singer Katy Perry to host MTV Video Music Awards show
Katy Perry will host the 2017 MTV Video Music Awards. The announcement was made on Thursday.
The 32-year-old said in a statement: 'I’ve been training with MTV in zero gravity, eating astronaut ice cream, and I’m on a group text with Buzz Aldrin and Neil deGrasse Tyson.Come August 27th, I’ll be ready to be your MOONWOMAN! Brace for impact, kids.'
Promo photos of the ex-wife of Russell Brand saw her in a space suit holding up a peace sign while balancing the MTV flag.
The event will take place at the Fabulous Forum in Inglewood, California on Sunday, August 27.
In advance of the world tour for her most recent, chart-topping album, Witness, Perry will light up the stage as the first performer announced for this year’s show.
Earlier this week, she secured a spot as one of the top nominees for the 2017 VMAs with nods in five categories, including: Best Pop, Best Direction and Best Visual Effects for “Chained to the Rhythm,” Best Art Direction for “Bon Appetit,” and Best Collaboration for Calvin Harris’ “Feels” featuring Pharrell Williams, Perry and Big Sean.
The most interesting categories was for Best Collaboration, which could turn into one big celebrity catfight during the live August telecast.
Best pals Selena Gomez and Taylor Swift will go head to head with frenemy Perry.
Gomez is named for her song We Don't Talk Anymore with Charlie Puth. Swift was listed for her work with Zayn Malik for I Don't Wanna Live Forever.
And Perry was recognized for her work with Calvin Harris and Pharrell on Feels.
Also in the category are Khaled with Rihanna and Tiller for Wild Thoughs, DRAM and Lil Yachty for Broccoli and The Chainsmokers and Halsey for Closer.
Swift released Bad Blood in 2014 and it was assumed the song was about Perry.
Taylor told Rolling Stone: 'For years, I was never sure if we were friends or not. She would come up to me at awards shows and say something and walk away, and I would think, "Are we friends, or did she just give me the harshest insult of my life?"
Hopefully all will go well without any clashes between the trio.
'We’re thrilled to have global phenomenon Katy Perry as the host and a performer at the 2017 VMAs,' Bruce Gillmer, Head of Music and Music Talent, Global Entertainment Group, Viacom.
'She is at the forefront of music culture and the perfect person to anchor this year’s show, which promises to be one of the most diverse and music-filled in VMA history.'
Katy Perry’s new album, Witness (Capitol Records), debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard 200, marking her third album to debut atop the chart.
MTV released the full list of nominees for the 2017 MTV Video Music Awards earlier this week.
